Mission

The Northwest Labor Press delivers news, views and information about organized labor, focusing on issues that impact union members in the Pacific Northwest.

There's no better source for timely and in-depth reports on union organizing campaigns, contract negotiations, strikes, and day-to-day news about the region's labor unions.

Unions, as democratic organizations designed to protect workers' rights, are a vital force in any democracy. Labor leaders know that key to the health of the union movement is an informed, active membership.

Corporate-owned news media don't cover adequately or report fairly on labor issues. While they regularly give extensive coverage to business, unions are covered only when strikes break out, and even then coverage focuses on inconvenience to customers or hardship for managers. Most people, including most union members, don't think about this bias when they consume the news.

That's why the Northwest Labor Press was founded, and that's why it continues to be necessary - to cover news about the labor movement that union members can't get anywhere else.

Circulation

The Northwest Labor Press has the third-largest paid subscription base in the Portland metropolitan area. Only The Oregonian and Vancouver Columbian exceed this figure.

Founded in 1900, the Northwest Labor Press is one of the oldest trade union publications in the United States.

It is mailed twice a month and delivered by second-class mail in Oregon and southwest Washington to approximately 50,000 homes.

Members of 84 local unions are among our paid subscribers.

Services to subscribers

  • Free publication of meeting and election notices -- Union locals that subscribe their members can have their meeting and election notices posted, at no charge, on the meeting notices page of the Northwest Labor Press. This posting fulfills the requirements of the Landrum-Griffin Act. Union locals find it extremely cost-effective because it saves the cost of printing and mailing out the notice (usually at first class postal rates.)
  • Free classified ads -- Subscribers can place classified ads at no charge to sell personal items.
  • Newsletter Plus -- Through our Newsletter Plus program, we publish the newsletters of over a dozen local unions and district councils — as a wrap-around or insert in the regular edition of the Northwest Labor Press. Each union provides the text and photos for its own pages. Then Labor Press staff edit for style and grammar and do page layout and design. If your union is currently publishing a newsletter or thinking about starting one, we can save you money and give members the added benefit of news about the wider labor movement in the regular pages of the Northwest Labor Press.
